Sounds like in your philosophy, which I applaud, you are taking a page from Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point," when he describes different types of people. In our approach to business contacts, it makes sense to try to be a good Connector. We need to constantly think about people we can link to each other when ever we are out networking. If nothing else, it will go a long way to build a group of people that know we have their best interests at heart.

Hi Marlene,

Thank you for your comment. What should people say first? And when should they say their name? We'd love to have your input on this subject! :)

Mindy, that is all good advice. I teach a class on Powerful introductions. The first thing I teach every one is to never say your name first. You only get 7 seconds to make an impression, so you better make it good.

You should also consider attending your local networking events such as the Chamber of Commerce meetings and all local investor meetings in order to hand the card and network with potential clients. The more you out there, the better chance you have to secure some large, long-term customers!

Hi Lorraine, thank you for these insightful tips. I agree with all of your suggestions, especially showing passion about what you do - and I have to say I love the phrase "spins your jets" - awesome! I also love that you're encouraging professionals to use their elevator speech as a tool to "hasten the path from 'hello' to 'yes'. Brilliant! Thanks again for sharing your expertise!

Very nice article Emmy!

I agree that "Star Gazers" can be quite insulting without even realizing it. For many people that I mentor, I tell them that one of the keys to successful networking is having a sincere interest in the people they meet. That means for one thing "active listening" when having a conversation with a person. Not doing so and having wandering eyes while conversing with someone is the KISS OF DEATH in networking.

All very good points and thank you for taking the time to share the information with us.

Best Regards and Take Care,

Gil

Hi Dawn,

I agree. It's important that we give a clear and eloquent description of our business and what we do. Thank you for the time and hard work you put into business networking! We're looking forward to the cruise!

I love people getting a chance to create an elevator speech, which I like to think of as their passion and purpose, expressed powerfully and concisely. How can we expect others to "get" us and what we do, if we don't take the time to say it in a way that they can understand it easily. Thanks for all you do to help people network.

I agree with Keith, if you are going to network, make sure you follow up with the people you meet. If you do not follow up, you will not get the great benefit out of your networking experiences, both professional and personal.
